Still the waters

The water is still, calm, relaxed. It is clear & reflects reality like a clean mirror. Tranquility, at least for the first moments. Then pebbles… Pebbles hitting the water, causing ripples, blurring reality. Some ripples are bigger than others. Some pebbles skip & cause many ripples. But from where do these pebbles come from? It seems as though they come from nothing & from nowhere, but they must come from somewhere. Or at least I think they must. Some pebbles hit the water lightly letting the water repose itself quickly. Some hit the water harder & reality becomes blurred & I start to feel myself going under. But when I start to feel the ripples, I let the pebbles sink, slowly into darkness… Water becomes still again. Clear & calm. & when the water is unmoving, I do not feel the water, as if I am water; not knowing its presence yet in its presence; true being. Then, come the pebbles again. Many sink fast, but some linger on & become disastrous. They stay too long, causing the water to take in affect a whirlpool & if I don’t catch it fast enough, it brings me down under, spinning me into the bottom of its pit where nothing is, yet everything is in. I get lost without being lost, & at many times I feel myself not wanting to leave such a place, but no matter what, sooner or later, I float back up & the whirlpool & the pebbles are gone. It takes practice, but I must keep the water still, calm, & see reality in it. As long as the water is in equanimity, I am here & aware of every moment without being aware of it. A state of no-mind. I reside in it like a fish not knowing water. I come back, awaken… Pebbles… This will take much practice. A practice of a lifetime. When the water is unmoving, it can only be moved… Still the waters.
